Beyond Relaxation: The Real Benefits of Massage Therapy
By Emily Ashburton-Dunning
When people think of massage, they often picture a moment of indulgence, a special treat to unwind and yes, massage can be relaxing. But in my work at Ashburton Therapy Clinic, I’ve seen it become something much deeper. A gentle turning point, a quiet rebalancing, a kind of care that reaches far beyond relaxation.
Massage therapy is one of the most meaningful ways we can support the body and mind, together. It gives us a chance to soften the tension we carry (often without realising), reconnect with ourselves and create space for healing both physically and emotionally.
Here’s what I’ve come to know, from my hands-on experience, about the real benefits of massage.
Soothing Stress, One Breath at a Time
Stress shows up in our bodies long before we’re ready to admit it. I see it all the time, tight jaws, hunched shoulders, shallow breath., massage gently invites the body to let go.
During a session, cortisol (the stress hormone) begins to lower, while feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine rise, the breath deepens, the heart slows, a sense of calm begins to unfold. It’s not just about feeling good, it’s about feeling comfortable again in your own skin.
Encouraging Restful, Restorative Sleep
So many of the clients I work with struggle with sleep, racing thoughts, restless bodies, tension that refuses to ease at bedtime. Massage helps to quiet the nervous system, bringing the body into its natural “rest and digest” mode.
Some clients say it’s the first deep sleep they’ve had in weeks and honestly, that feels like such a gift to offer people the rest they’ve been missing.
Easing Physical Tension and Supporting Recovery
Massage does more than unwind stress, it supports your body in real, tangible ways. Whether you’re recovering from exercise, managing chronic pain, or simply worn out from everyday life, massage helps improve circulation, ease muscular tightness and increase flexibility.
It’s not just about working on the body, it’s about working with the body, listening to what it needs and helping it heal in its own time.
Clearing Mental Clutter
I can’t count how many times a client has come in feeling overwhelmed and left with a clearer, lighter mind. That’s because when we work with the body, we’re also working with the nervous system.
Massage creates stillness and in that stillness, the mind can soften, recalibrate and return to clarity. For many of us, that space is rare, but so needed.
Deep Tissue Massage: A Deeper Kind of Relief
If you’re carrying long-held tension, or dealing with deep muscular discomfort, I often recommend deep tissue massage. It’s one of the most effective ways to reach the places that lighter treatments just can’t touch.
Refresh and Restore Tired Muscles
Deep tissue massage works on the deeper layers of muscle and fascia (connective tissue). It boosts circulation and helps bring oxygen to areas that have been tight or inflamed, leaving your muscles feeling renewed and more relaxed.
Break Down Scar Tissue and Muscle Knots
Over time, the body can develop adhesions, especially after injuries or repetitive movements. Deep tissue massage helps break these down gently, restoring movement and comfort.
Healing That Happens Beyond the Session
It’s normal to feel a little sore the next day, like your body’s been through a bit of a workout. But in the days that follow, something shifts. The tension lifts. The pain eases. The body begins to move more freely. It’s healing, unfolding quietly and deeply.
Questions I’m Often Asked
Over the years, I’ve heard just about every question you can imagine about massage. Here are some of the most common ones, answered with care.
Is massage suitable for everyone?
In most cases, yes. If you’re pregnant, have a medical condition, or you’re healing from something specific, I’ll always adapt the session to suit you. If you’re ever unsure, we can talk it through, or check in with your GP first. Your safety and comfort are always my top priorities.
How often should I come for a massage?
That depends on what you need. Some people benefit from weekly sessions, especially if they’re dealing with chronic pain or stress. Others come every few weeks, or just when they feel the need to reset. We’ll find a rhythm that feels right for you, not a schedule based on anyone else’s rules.
What should I wear?
Wear something comfortable. You’ll always be covered during your treatment and only the area I’m working on will be uncovered. You’re welcome to undress to your level of comfort, this is your space, and it’s important you feel safe in it.
Can massage help with anxiety or depression?
Massage isn’t a replacement for therapy or mental health care, but it can be a powerful support. I’ve worked with many clients who find that massage helps ease physical symptoms of anxiety and reconnect them with their body in a way that feels grounding and gentle.
Which type of massage is best for me?
That depends on what you’re looking for. Some people need a nurturing, full-body experience to relax. Others are dealing with stubborn aches and need a more focused, therapeutic approach like deep tissue massage. We’ll talk before we begin and I’ll always tailor the session to meet your needs.
You Deserve to Feel Cared For
I believe deeply in the healing power of touch. In the quiet reassurance that massage can offer. In the way a single session can soften something that’s been tight for far too long, physically or emotionally.
Whether you're coming for pain relief, peace of mind, or simply a space to breathe, you’re welcome here.
You don’t have to wait until you’re burnt out to ask for help. You deserve this kind of care, right now.
With warmth,
Emily
