Pregnancy Massage: A Gentle Way to Feel More Comfortable

By Ashburton Therapy Clinic

Pregnancy is a time of incredible change, emotionally, physically and spiritually. It’s a season of anticipation and transformation, but let’s be honest, it can also bring discomfort, restlessness and aching in places you didn’t know could ache. I often hear this from the mums-to-be who visit the clinic: “I didn’t realise how much tension I was holding until I felt it release.”

That’s the quiet magic of pregnancy massage.

Why Pregnancy Massage?

From the moment your body begins to adapt to support new life, it works overtime, shifting posture, loosening ligaments and adjusting circulation. These natural changes can often lead to back pain, swollen legs and feet and sleep that feels more elusive than restful.

Pregnancy massage offers a gentle, nurturing response. Using specially adapted techniques and positions to keep you safe and supported, this type of massage is designed not only to ease muscular aches and reduce swelling, but to restore a deep sense of calm. In a world that keeps spinning, pregnancy massage offers stillness, a moment just for you.

The Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

Some of the most common reasons expectant mothers come to me include:

  • Lower back and hip pain
As the body adapts to your growing baby, your centre of gravity shifts, often leading to pressure and discomfort in the lower back. Massage helps to ease tight muscles and encourage more balanced posture.

  • Swollen feet and hands
Increased fluid retention is common during pregnancy. Gentle massage can stimulate the lymphatic system, helping to reduce puffiness and bring relief.

  • Poor sleep
Many pregnant women find it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep. Regular massage can support deeper relaxation and promote better rest.

  • Emotional wellbeing
You’re preparing for a major life transition and that can bring up all sorts of emotions. Massage can help calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety and create space for you to reconnect with yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is pregnancy massage safe for me and my baby?
Yes, when carried out by a trained, qualified therapist, pregnancy massage is completely safe. At Ashburton Therapy Clinic, we only offer massage to women who are beyond their first trimester (after 12 weeks) and we always adapt techniques to suit your unique needs.

What position will I be in during the massage?
We have different options here, we have a specialised pregnancy massage support which enables you to lay on your tummy, or you can lay on your side, supported with cushions and bolsters so you feel completely comfortable. Your safety and comfort are always our priority. Some gentle work may also be done in a seated or semi-reclined position.

Do I need to bring anything?
Just yourself. We provide everything you need—soft towels, warm blankets, and a peaceful environment where you can fully relax.

Can massage help with anxiety or feeling emotionally overwhelmed?
Absolutely. Gentle touch helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s natural ‘rest and restore’ state. Many women find massage reduces their anxiety and helps them feel more emotionally grounded.

How often should I have pregnancy massage?
This varies. Some women come monthly throughout their second and third trimesters, while others find weekly sessions most beneficial as their due date approaches. We’ll talk through what feels right for you.
